Support Alex Agape Home: A Sanctuary for Vulnerable Children in Kollam!

Imagine a child, barely old enough to speak, left alone on the streets, with no one to care for them. This is the harsh reality for over 18 million children in India. Or imagine a special needs child that is bedridden left at home while the daily wage parents go to work. Alex Agape Home is a sanctuary for up to 45 such children, a place where they can find the love and care they desperately need. A place where 7 special needs children get the proper 24/7 care and treatments they so desperately need.

Since 2020, the number of orphans and abandoned children in India has risen by 25%, according to the Central Government. Many of these children have endured unimaginable hardships, including neglect, abuse, and exploitation. The situation is dire, with over 47,000 cases of child sexual harassment, assault, and pornography reported in 2021 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. Alarmingly, boys reported higher abuse rates (52.94%) compared to girls (47.06%).

Tragically, over 30% of children in care homes have been abandoned by their families because of physical or neurological disabilities. These children face an uphill battle, as the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) notes that children with disabilities are less likely to be adopted in India.

For families living on less than Rs. 100 a day, supporting a child with special needs is often beyond their means. Some parents, burdened by poverty and superstition, feel they have no choice but to abandon their children, leaving them to fend for themselves in a world that seems indifferent to their suffering.

This is where Alex Agape Home steps in. Alex Agape Home is a sanctuary for these forgotten children, a place where they are cherished, nurtured, and truly loved, regardless of their physical or neurological disabilities. The home currently cares for 45 children, including 7 children with special needs. The care provided here is not just about meeting basic needs; it’s about giving these children a chance at life, with special medical care tailored to their unique needs.

In one heartbreaking instance, a special needs child was found lying on the floor of a mud hut, neglected for hours. His family, struggling with poverty and a lack of resources, simply couldn’t provide the care he needed. Thankfully, children like him find refuge at Alex Agape Home, where they are finally given the attention and love they deserve.

But Alex Agape Home cannot continue this vital work without your help. Your donation—no matter how small—can change the course of a child's life, providing them with not just food and shelter, but a future filled with hope and possibility.

The Challenge: Rising Costs and Government Mandates

Caring for these children is a deeply rewarding yet financially challenging endeavor. The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (JJ Act) mandates stringent standards for child care, which, while essential for ensuring the best care, also significantly increase the cost of providing for each child. These regulations require separate buildings for boys, girls and special needs children increasing the cost of rent. The act also requires specific staffing ratios against the number of children, and specialized training for the staff, along with comprehensive medical care and inhouse facilities, all of which contribute to the ever rising expenses.

Currently our monthly costs is around Rs. 15,000 per child with basic needs and Rs. 19,500 for a special needs child.

This includes, food and nutrition, diapers, feeding tubes, pediasure formula for malnourished children, milk, medical supplies, doctor visits, medical treatments, education and tutors, a comfortable, clean and well maintained home, clothing, counselling, therapies, a full time nurse, 24/7 caregivers and and the list could go on.

With limited funding and the growing number of children in need, Alex Agape Home is facing unprecedented financial strain. The cost of providing for each child has surged, making it increasingly difficult to sustain operations without external support.

Important Note: The founder and the trustees do not take any salary or remuneration for their endless time, efforts and services. Hence 100% of all your donations is used to provide care for the children.
